 PURPOSE

Rotary Charities recognizes the vital role that nonprofit organizations perform in maintaining the area's quality of life.  We understand that in order to remain collectively responsive to community needs, nonprofit organizations must regularly focus on how best to accomplish their individual missions.  Therefore, Rotary Charities supports a variety of efforts to ensure the sustainability of an efficient and effective nonprofit system.

   

To assist nonprofits develop successful strategies for organizational capacity building (OCB), Rotary Charities provides funding on two different levels:

  

  • One Year OCB Assessment and Planning Grants (Level 1) and
  • Multiple Year OCB Grants (Level 2).  

 Prior to submitting a multiple year request, the applicant must undergo an Organizational Capacity Assessment through NorthSky Nonprofit Network.  This work can be funded by Rotary Charities; see the details below. In order to assist a nonprofit develop successful organizational capacity building strategies, Rotary Charities will provide funding on two different levels:

 

LEVEL 1

 Organizational Capacity Assessment and Planning Grants:  Maximum request: $5,000.  Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Application deadlines are the 1st of each month. An organizational capacity assessment and board training conducted by NorthSky Nonprofit Network is the first required step in the Rotary Charities Capacity Building Grant program. The Organizational Capacity Assessment and Planning Grants can be applied for at any time. Prior to applying for planning grants, the applicant must have:

  • 501(c)(3)
  • Been providing services for at least one year, and
  • A nonprofit business plan is highly recommended

LEVEL 2

  Organizational Capacity Building Grants: one- to three-year grants that provide support for Implementation/Changes, Monitoring and Evaluation of recommendations outlined in the Action Plan.  Maximum request: $110,000 over three years. Application deadlines are March 1 and September 1.  A completed Organizational Capacity Assessment is a required pre-requisite before applying for Level 2 Organizational Capacity Building grants.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
 

Organizational Capacity Building Grants are available to implement recommendations that come from a planning and assessment process. A completed organizational assessment or strategic planning process is a pre-requisite for receiving this type of grant support from Rotary Charities. 

 

Rotary Charities will accept proposals for the following activities that are recommended upon completion of the NorthSky organizational capacity assessment:

  1. Organizational development activities
  2. New staff positions that are critical to building organizational, financial or leadership capacity
  3. Collaboration, partnership or merger activities
  4. Recommended strategies as they relate to building organizational capacity, effectiveness or efficiency
In order to apply for an Organizational Capacity Building Grant from Rotary Charities, a nonprofit organization must:
  1. Have conducted a NorthSky Nonprofit Network organizational assessment within the past three years that involved full participation of the board and staff.
  2. Summarize the key findings from the assessment or planning process.
  3. Submit the action plan that was developed to address the key findings.
  4. Identify one or two key action items to be addressed by Rotary Charities’ grant funds.
 Grant amounts and duration
  1. Grants may range from $5,001 to a maximum of $50,000.
  2. If needed, a funding plan for up to three years will be considered. Funding will be decided on a yearly basis; applicants must submit a report and request for renewal funding each year. Second and third year funding levels will be established on a decreasing basis. If a need for multiple year funding is anticipated, a three-year projected budget worksheet must be included.   
  3. Rotary Charities will provide:
    • up to 75% of the total cash required to complete year one of the project; grant amount not to exceed $50,000
    • up to 50% of the total cash required to complete year two of the project; grant amount not to exceed $35,000
    • up to 25% of the total cash required to complete year three of the project; grant amount not to exceed $25,000.

Application Process 

  1. Before submitting, all applicants should schedule a meeting with Rotary staff to discuss their proposal.
  2. The next submission deadline for proposals is 5pm, September 1, 2010.  
  3. The Organizational Capacity Building Grant application form, budget and cover sheet must be completed and submitted electronically (at http://rotarycharities.egrant.net) along with all attachments. No hard copies are necessary, unless a required document is not available in electronic format.
  4. The proposal will be reviewed by Rotary Charities staff and a team of Rotarians, with decisions by December 15.
  5. Grants will be awarded based on Rotary Charities Board approval.
  6. Rotary Charities staff will meet with a funded organization to develop a Grant Agreement Letter, which will include mutually agreeable measurable outcomes, time frames and a reporting schedule.
